In Math 7 today, students explored concepts associated with constructing and analyzing box and whisker plots. Students became aware that there are a multitude of data displays that can be utilized to interpret data. Each display has its own unique advantages and disadvantages associated with their use. A box and whisker plot is a way to visually show the median, extremes, greatest concentration, and range of a set of data. This information becomes useful when trying to make interpretations regarding the variability of the data. Students will continue their study of statistical data displays for the next two weeks as we prepare for the Unit 1 assessment tentatively scheduled for September 29th.

Having practiced concepts associated with the Measures of Central Tendency yesterday, we extended the opportunities for learning today by examining the Measures of Variation. Students were challenged to integrate their understanding of central tendencies with newer concepts that examined the variation of a given data set. Throughout the lesson, students worked on finding the median, quartiles, interquartile range, and any potential outliers that exist within a set of data.
Yesterday in class, students reviewed concepts that were associated with Measures of Central Tendency. Although students may have been exposed to the concepts during their studies of the Math 6 curriculum, we reviewed the skills in preparation for future lessons relating to determining the measures of variation. Students should be encouraged to review sections 4-3, 4-4, and 4-5 which will be taught later today in preparation for their first quiz this Friday.

AuthorMy name is Mr. Bliven and I have been teaching at Matsunaga for 13 years. I love teaching and view education as a lifelong journey. Although I already hold several graduate degrees from McDaniel College and Johns Hopkins, I was thrilled to have recently completed my graduate certificate in technology integration from the University of Florida. I plan to continue my graduate studies and I am looking forward to using the strategies I learn with my students. Archives
