As the British approached, the Patriots held their fire. When the Patriots finally fired, the British were forced back. At the second attack the British were turned back again. On the third attack the British made it over the hill and took both Bunker and Breed's Hills. One thousand redcoats were wounded or dead. About 400 Patriots were lost.
During the first few years of the conflict between the British and the colonists, much of the fighting centered around Boston. About 6,000 British troops were stationed there. In response, the Colonial militia surrounded the city of Boston and prevented the British from marching out. On June 16, 1775, Colonel Prescott led 1,200 minutemen up Bunker Hill, across the river from Boston, with plans of firing on British ships in Boston harbor. However, Colonel Prescott saw that Breed's Hill was an even better position and he ordered his men there.

AuthorMy name is Mr. Bliven and I have been teaching at Matsunaga for 13 years. I love teaching and view education as a lifelong journey. Although I already hold several graduate degrees from McDaniel College and Johns Hopkins, I was thrilled to have recently completed my graduate certificate in technology integration from the University of Florida.
